Each season on a flower farm can be challenging, but it is important to step back and cherish the beauty. A person once told me that if you are lucky in life you will get to see peonies in your yard bloom for 80 years. This statement really resonated with me and made me look at each spring differently. Growing spring flowers and seeing them bloom one time each year for hopefully many years would be the goal! Some flowers like lilacs, daffodils, tulips, peonies, and lily of the valley bloom just once each season and are not seen until the following year. I used to hate this because spring flowers have such amazing color and scents. I would love to grow them year round, but was reminded that by only having them once a year, makes themall that more special in the next! Although I have always hated change as a child, it is inevitable and it is also one of the only constants in the world. Starting a flower farm and growing many different varieties throughout each season has taught us that sometimes change can be good. Sometimes you have to take a leap and that jump could open up better opportunities for new experiencers in life.
This spring we decided to increase the number of daffodils and tulips we grow. We purposely staggered the plantings and ordered early, mid, and late varieties, but many of the tulips decided they were coming in together regardless. My parents, Jackie, and I have been harvesting them daily and placing them in a walk-in cooler we have in our barn to be stored for arrangements and bouquets. Our greenhouse is full and we are at the point where we need to plant what we have to make room for the new planting of seedlings we need for the fall.
Mother's day is coming up and we are excited to arrange many bouquets for our pre orders and roadside stands with these spring blooms. Tulips represent happiness and good luck, while daffodils represent new beginnings. Perfect flowers to start the season:) This year, enjoy each spring and all of the beauty that comes with it!
